What happens if my MOT has already expired?
Not having a valid MOT certificate is illegal under Section 47 of the Road traffic Act 1988 and you run the risk of facing a £1,000 fine and six to eight penalty points on your licence by driving without one. You need to make an appointment urgently.
Without a current MOT, your car insurance also becomes invalid.
The only time you can legally drive without an MOT is when you’re travelling to a pre-booked MOT appointment.
It is a legal requirement to take your car for an MOT every year if your vehicle is over three years old. Due to the changes in General Data Protection Regulation, we are no longer able to send you an MOT reminder by post. However, you can get a free text or email reminder direct by registering at www.gov.uk/mot-reminder.
It is wise not to wait until the day your MOT is due to expire to have your MOT test carried out just in case it does fail you may have to cope without a vehicle until it can be fixed or retested.
An MOT test can be carried out up to 28 days before the expiry date, without losing the original anniversary date? This means a new MOT test certificate can be valid for up to 13 months. This can be helpful if you suspect repairs maybe required to your vehicle, giving you more time to get them sorted before your MOT runs out.
