AdBlue

What is AdBlue?

AdBlue is an exhaust fluid not a fuel additive.  AdBlue is a solution of synthetic urea and de-mineralised water.  It is colourless and non-toxic.  AdBlue is used to help reduce harmful exhaust emissions in many Euro 6 diesel engines and has become increasingly common since 2015.

How does AdBlue work?

AdBlue is automatically injected in small quantities into the flow of exhaust gases where it reacts with the Nitrogen Oxide (of which Nitrogen Dioxide is the most harmful pollutant) and breaks it down into harmless nitrogen and water.

Where is AdBlue located in my vehicle?

AdBlue is stored in a separate reservoir and can be topped up via the blue filler on your vehicle, which can normally be found in either the boot or beneath the bonnet, depending on the make and model.

What do I need to do?

To function correctly, the AdBlue tank must be refilled with AdBlue fluid when needed.  For most drivers, this will be carried out as part of your Scheduled Service but, depending on your driving style, or size of tank, they may need filling up sooner. If the AdBlue tank does need to be topped up, the urea warning light will come on when you switch on the ignition. You should arrange to have it topped up as soon as possible. This is a quick and simple procedure and we can often carry this out whilst-you-wait.

What happens if my AdBlue runs out?

If the AdBlue is not refilled and the fluid does run out the engines power and performance will be reduced in order to limit emissions. Once the engine is turned off, it will not restart until AdBlue has been replenished and reset.
